Joseph Chamberlain –
The Lecture

Our vision for the annual Chamberlain Lecture is it being an opportunity for us to come together to reflect on the achievements of local government and the local public sector and look ahead to where the sector is going, all the while grounded in our shared history and ethos of public service – which we believe was embodied by Joseph Chamberlain.

The annual Chamberlain Lecture is an opportunity for us to come together. An opportunity to reflect on the achievements of local government and the local public sector, and look ahead to where the sector is going. We believe in staying grounded in our shared history and ethos of public service – an ethos that was embodied by Joseph Chamberlain.

Previous Speakers

The series was launched in 2018 by Lord Heseltine, former Deputy Prime Minister. His lecture was inspired by his well-known mantra, “Show me the problem, show me the person in charge”.

The following year, we were honoured to welcome Lord Kerslake, former Head of the Civil Service and Permanent Secretary for the Department for Communities and Local Government, who delivered an equally inspirational and thought provoking lecture.

In 2021 the Lecture was given by Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, a place he describes as ‘a city of Hope, built on ambition, inclusion and social justice’

This year Georgia Gould, Leader of London Borough of Camden and Chair of London Councils, gave a motivational Lecture, encouraging Leaders to ‘Unlock Hope’ in their communities.
